Rewriting Your Story: From Self-Doubt to Global Impact

One of the major things standing between you and your goal is the story you keep telling yourself; the one on autoplay.

Fresh out of college, the pressure to find a "real job" was strong. But I craved something different. So, I embarked on a non-traditional path, exploring India, Vietnam, London, Morocco, and South Africa. I became a citizen of the world. It was an incredible journey of self-discovery, understanding the world, and realizing how I could make a real difference.

Of course, doubt crept in. "I'm not ready," "I’m not qualified enough," "Maybe I need more degrees." These internal battles threatened to derail me, but with the help of mentors, I refocused on my core purpose. I pushed through the good and bad times, always remembering what truly mattered. I learned to silence those negative stories and refocus on my "why."

Finding my path meant rewriting my script and telling a different story.

In 2019, an emergency heart surgery forced me to reevaluate my life’s purpose. After surviving that, I began telling myself a new story on repeat: "I am here for a reason." I yearned for deeper fulfillment and found it in Uganda, working with women entrepreneurs to empower themselves and their communities.

When COVID-19 hit, government officials suspended market activity, forcing the women, whose livelihoods depended on sales, to stop operating. In response, I helped facilitate contactless payments to keep their businesses afloat and curb the spread of the virus. Building a relationship with these women and seeing the direct impact of my work launched my career into payments, where I now have a fulfilling profession.

Every day brings new obstacles, goals, interactions, and setbacks. New scripts are constantly being written, but they don’t have to all be internalized and remain on replay. Be mindful of your inner narrative because they shape your vision for yourself and your reality. When negativity plays on repeat, challenge it. Rewrite the script, and tell a story that moves you toward your goals and vision.
