Overcoming Hesitation and Building Confidence in Professional Settings
Throughout my professional journey, I've encountered numerous individuals who hesitate to voice their ideas. I completely understand this, as I, too, grew up in an environment where expressing one's thoughts wasn't always encouraged.
This initially posed a challenge when it came to articulating myself in professional settings, a crucial skill to develop if you aspire to advance in your career. Nevertheless, with consistent practice (and by that, I mean a whole lot of practice), you can acquire the ability to confidently speak up and transcend the discomfort that may be holding you back, thereby unlocking your full potential.
I'd like to share three practical approaches that have assisted me in honing my voice and using it assertively:
1️⃣ The Meeting Challenge: It all started with a simple commitment – to share my thoughts in every appropriate meeting. Initially, speaking up was nerve-wracking, fueled by the fear of judgment or saying the wrong thing. However, by persistently pushing through the discomfort and sharing my thoughts, my confidence steadily grew.
2️⃣ Taking the Lead: The second pivotal moment occurred when I actively pursued assignments that placed me in leadership roles. There's something about steering a project that compels you to use your voice. Not only do you articulate your vision, but you also guide others in achieving it. This experience was transformative, urging me to step out of my comfort zone and speak with authority.
3️⃣ Joining Business Resource Groups (BRGs) and other Networking Groups: These spaces are the perfect playground to practice introducing yourself, refine how to share what you do, and hone how to connect with people. These groups often provide workshops and skills on how to shift your mindset so that it aligns with the power of using your voice in all spaces and propelling your career forward.
I'm sharing this with the hope of inspiring those who may come from backgrounds that have made them hesitant to speak up. Your voice is a unique and valuable tool, eagerly waiting for you to unlock its potential. #corporatecareers #workculture #leadership #careersuccess
